Africa bears 25% of the global burden of disease,
but only has 3% of the world’s health workers.

When human capacity falls short, gaps in the
delivery of life-saving health services grow wider.

AHC is a non-governmental organization working to fill these critical gaps in health services, while addressing the root causes of sub-Saharan Africa’s quality health workforce shortage through capacity building, evaluation and collaborative partnerships.

WHAT WE DO

Our Programs

AHC strives to achieve a healthier and more equitable world, free of health disparities. Our interventions aim to build local capacity by giving health workforces and communities the tools they need to thrive and create sustainable change.

Clinical Programs

Our clinical programs provide a range of comprehensive HIV/AIDs and family planning services in partnership with the Rwandan Defense Forces through its hospitals and clinics, with the aim of building internal capacity to meet community needs.

Community Outreach

We conduct community outreach campaigns to fill short-term demands where we have the expertise, such as in HIV prevention through voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) and targeted HIV testing and counselling for high-risk populations.

Remote Populations

Remote Populations We serve populations in hard-to-reach areas with a full package of HIV/AIDs prevention, treatment, counselling and family planning interventions.

Capacity Building

Our approach aims to build capacity across program areas through lab and information technology infrastructure improvement and educational sessions on HIV management and family planning.

Welcome to Our Campaign

Your donations provide invaluable support to our programs working to build local capacity by giving health workforces and communities the tools they need to thrive and create sustainable change.

In 2016, the Alliance for Healthy Communities (AHC) was established to continue the work that was formerly implemented by Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU), and Drew Cares International (DCI) in partnership with Rwanda Defense Force and the US Department of Defense in HIV/AIDS Prevention and Treatment as well as implementing other public health and social welfare programs.
AHC uses primarily co-creation approaches whereby interventions are designed through needs assessment and with inputs from partners and the communities served. Additionally, all interventions include capacity building and evaluation approaches to ensure transfer of skills to ensure sustainability.
Through capacity building, AHC equips communities to effectively tackle health challenges and improve healthcare outcomes. By focusing on developing the skills and resources of local health workers, AHC works to bridge the gaps in life-saving services caused by a shortage of trained professionals. This approach ensures that vulnerable populations, including mothers and HIV patients, receive critical care while fostering long-term sustainability in healthcare delivery.
